- We’ll drive directly to Fátima where the shrine dedicated to Our Lady stands and you’ll have free time for your personal devotions and lunch. At a short distance we’ll visit, at Aljustrel, the two houses where Jacinta, Francisco and Lucia (the 3 shepherds) that saw Our Lady lived.
Fátima is Portugal ’s most celebrated shrine visited by millions of pilgrims. The devotion to the Virgin Mary started in 1917 when Our Lady appeared to 3 children. Since then pilgrims from all over the World come to Fátima on the 12th and 13th of every month. The most famous pilgrim was Pope John Paul II, that visited Fátima 3 times and for his second visit offered Our Lady the bullet that almost killed him in Rome.
-This bullet is placed in the golden crown of Our Lady of Rosary of Fátima.
Next stop Batalha where you’ll have time to visit the monastery, the church, the cloisters, the chapterhouse and the Unfinished Chapels.
Batalha is the finest example of the gothic style of 14th/15th Century in the Country, with a profusion of pinnacles, spires, towers and a wonderful ornamentation. Batalha is an expression in stone of national pride and the celebration of Portuguese Independence from Spain.
