- Visit Portugal’s largest Abbey founded in the 12th Century by the Cistercians, in early gothic style. Alcobaça became a memorial in stone to a tragic love story between D. Pedro and D. Inês.
- Batalha is the finest example of the gothic style of 14th/15th Century in the Country, with a profusion of pinnacles, spires, towers and wonderful ornamentation. Batalha is an expression in stone of national pride and the celebration of Portuguese Independence from Spain.
- Visit the Convent of Christ, situated in Tomar, a city located on the banks of the river Nabão belonging to the district of Santarem in the province of Ribatejo, it was conquered from the Moors by D. Afonso Henriques in 1147, after which it was donated by the monarch to the Templars in 1159.
- With the end of the Order of the Temple in 1312 by decision of Pope John XXII, who wanted to see the Templars banned in Europe, was founded the Military Order of Christ, because of the need to defend the border of Algarve. The Order's headquarters were transferred to Castro Marim, 37 years later, to which he returned to settle in to take concrete decisions in his castle.
So from here originated the main center of the sustained epic of Discovery.
- Infante D. Henrique, appointed by the Pope as Head of the Order of Christ, would come to settle in the castle of Tomar.
Tomar was elevated to the rank of city in 1844 and was visited by Queen Mary II the following year.
- Today it's not only known for its fabulous monuments, of which stands out the Convent of Christ, but also for its potential tourism where visitors can inspect many historical buildings and archaeological relics.
